According to Chinese traditional legend, the Creator gathered the twelve animals to determine the leader of the lunar cycle. Contest to cross a river was made. Anyone who was crosssing the river fastest would get the first turn, and the rest would follow according to their arrival order.
During the competition, the cunning rat was riding on a strong and handsome buffalo to cross a river. Whenthe buffalo was about to jump into the river bank, without his notice, the rat jumped from the buffalo's back, and made him the winner of the contest. The last animal was the lazy pig. Therefore, the Rat became the first year of the zodiac, cycle, and the pig was the last.
Chinese zodiac is a symbol that represents 12 years cycle in the Chinese calendar based on the circulation of the Moon.
