The International Day against Drug and Illicit Trafficking 26 June 2007

SAY NO TO DRUGS
Drugs have become the most serious threat to youth at every age level all over the world. In indonesia, that threat poses toward a productive level of age group during studying period, from basic school to college. BNN-Pranata UI survey (2003) estimates the number of drugs uses in student cluster is about 5.8%. Whereas BNN-Puslitkes survey (2005) on households shows prevelance of a lifetime drug addict at the level 2.4%. Prevalence of addicts in the category of high school and upper education is higher than of lower eduction.
Several reports show the proliferation of drug abuse and illicit trafficking problems in Indonesia. the figure of drug crimes handled by The Headquarters of The Indonesian National Police tends to incline in recent years. The increase occured not only in the number of criminals but in the number and variety of confiscated drug as well. As an effect of this crime, economic and social loss estimation suffered by the state 2004 is around Rp 23.6 billion. According to BNN-Puslitkes UI survey (2005). the estimated number of drug abuses is around 2.9 to 3.6 million or equals 1.5% of the national population. Obviously, this becomes a serious threat not only for the life and future of its users but for society, nation and the state as well.
War on drug campaign persistently conducted by way of International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking commemoration held every year on 26 June. In this year commemoration, United Nations Office on Drug and Crime (UNODOC) selected slogan of "Do drugs control your life? Your life. Your community. No place for drugs". This campaign aims at raising people's awareness as well as mobilizing support toward drug control. No individual, family or community is safe where illicit drug take control. Drug may control the body and mind of individual consumers. The cartels and crop may control farmers. Cosequently, illicit trafficking and crime may control community. In Indonesia, the campaign carried out by National Narcotics Board (NNB) depicits antidrug icon in the form of yellow butterfly with black outline. The shape of butterfly, naturally metamorphosed from caterpillar and cocoon, becomes a symbol of triumph upon sustained process against drug.
On the occasion of the commemoration on 26 June 2007, Directorate General of Post and Telecommunication is issues a stamp series "International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking". The stamp consist of two designs created by Animart. Complementing it, PT Pos Indonesia issues First Day Cover (FDC) for the stamp series designed by Alan Tandjung.
