THE 19TH SEA GAMES
Southeast Asia (SEA) Games originated from the SEAP (South East Asian Peninsular) Games which were held fot the first time in Bangkok, Thailand in 1959. Six countries participated in the first SEAP Games, namely Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar (Burma), Singapoe, Vietnam and Thailand, Indonesia, the Philippines and Brunei Darussalam joined the Games which was renamed SEA Games at its 9th meet in Malaysia in 1997. The name has since been officially adopted and the Games has become the most important sports event of the region. membership of SEA Games have increased to ten with Cambodia being the last number.
The 19th SEA Games will be staged in Jakarta from 11-19 October 1997. Around 5.300 athletes from ten countries will take part in the event, competing in 34 sports categories for 440 gold medals. Indonesia sends the largest contingent with 1.374 athletes. Thailand follows ath the second place with 1.253 athletes.
The 19th SEA Games logos resembles three flames and two rings of torch, together represent the 5 basic foundations of the Republic of Indonesia, Pancasila The red color expresses the spirit of the Games, the blue for the dynamism of the Games and the yellow symbolizes the hope which the Games brings to the athletes and the people. The chain consisting of 6 rings represents the six founding countries of the SEA Games while the gold color reflects the solidarity of the Games.
The committee has chosen "Hanoman" as the mascot of the event. Hanoman is one of the supporting characters in the Ramayana legend, and Indian epic which has spread throughout Souteast Asia and Indonesian archipelago. In competition, Hanoman always espouses the principle of"may the best man win". His sportsmanship is shown in his recognition of the strengths of his opponents and his own shortcomings and in his willingness to learn.
The 19th SEA Games stamp series is issued on 9 September 1997, in commemoration of National Sports Day. The designs feature athletics as the source of all sports as well as the logo and mascot of the event. The margin of the stamp sheets are decorated with pictogram of Hanoman in all categories of SEA Games XIX in addition to stamps, as first day cover, booklet, prepaid envelope, prepaid postcard, and prepaid aerogram are also issued.
