Preserve the Polar Regions and Glaciers The polar regions are the areas of the globe surrounding the poles consisting the Artic at the north and Antartic at the south. Also known as frigid zones, long winters with little daylight, and short summers with long days. Snow covers large span, as well as most of Greenland in the Artic. Most of the sea areas are covered by ise all the times. polar sea ice is currently thinning, possibly as a result of global warming. These regions receive less intensive solar radiation because the sun's energy arrives at an oblique angle, spreading over a larger area, and also travels a longer distance through the Earth's atmosphere in which it may be aborbed, scatterred or reflected. Even in many sites, the temperatures are not reaching values over zero in summer. The extreme marks that have been registered are of - 126 F in the Artartic, and-58 F in the Arctic. Another characteristic is that in both areas, as is more nearto the poles, winters are darker and summer most luminous. A glacier is a large, slow-moving mass of ice, formed from compacted layers of snow thet slowly deforms and flows in response to gravity and high pressure. Second to oceans, glacier ice is the largest reservoir of fresh water on Earth. Glaciers cover vast areas of polar regions, are found in mountain ranges of every continent, and are restricted to the highest mountains in the tropics. Glaciers are sensitive monitors of climate conditions and crucial to both world water resources and sea level variation. Preserving the polar regions and glaciers has becomes global concern of today. The impacts of global warming on these regions will reach far beyond the areas. It affects global climate, sea level, biodiversity and many aspects of human social and economic systems. The warming of polar regions and melting of glaciers demand urgent attention by decision makers and the public worldwide.
