On April1965, the President of North Jorea Kim Il Sung made a diplomatic visit to Indonesia. On the occasion of the visit, the President of Indonesia Soekarno askedKim Il Sung walked around to the Bogor botanical gardens, a large garden where the growth of various types of plants.

Kimilsungia was treated and developed in North Korea. The flower development goes on in North Korea. The process of cultivation in the country not only make the flower continues to grow, it was developed to be more fertile. If in Indonesia Kimilsunga has three petals each stalk, in North Korea cultivated be six to seven petals each stalk.

At that moment, Bung Karno initiative to provide the name of the flower. Came the  name "Kimilsungia", a mix of the name Kim Il Sung and Indonesia. "Flower Diplomacy" a la Soekarno was finally making Indonesia a special in the hearts of the people of North Korea.

To commemorate the good reltions of two countries, the Government of North Korea in 1999, for the first time, held a "Kimilsungia Flower Festival". Diplomatic relations between Indonesia and North Korea still continue to intertwine, though stiff and rushes. Although somewhat problematic because of the violation of human rights as well as its nuclear and missile ambitions that have threatened South Korea and Japan, North Korea has close political relations, economic interest, and strategic cooperation with Indonesia. Indonesia encourages North Korea to open up and do the right thing, as do Indonesia to Myanmar.
