50TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE FINANCIAL DAY 1946 - 1996 Special Stamps Issuance |
At the time when The Republic of Indonesia was proclaimed independent on 17 August 1945, the Japanese banknotes were the only legal medium of exchange in Indonesia. Nevertheless, in really the currency issued by the Dutch Indies government before W.W. II continued to circulate.
At that time, there were three kinds of Japanese occupation bnknotes circulating in Indonesia, Firstly, those already prepared before the Japanese troops invaded Indonesia, printed in Dutch words De Japansche Regeering, using Gulden as monetary unit, coded "S" and dated 1942. Secondly, those using Indonesian words Pemerintah Dai Nippon, issued in 1943, in Rp 100 denomination. Thirdly, those using the Japanese words Dai Nippon Teikoku Seihu in Rupiah unit, dated 1943, in Rp 10 and Rp 5 denominations.
On 29 September 1945, the Allied Forces landed in Tanjung Priok habour, Jakarta to disarm and repatriate the defeated Japanese troops. It was found out that the Dutch troops, under the leadership of Dr. H.J. Van Mook, were smuggling themselves among the Allied troops. The Commander of the Allied Forces ordered his subordinates not to accept the Japanese money, and, instead, circulated NICA (Netherlands Indies Civil Administration) banknotes which had been printed in Australia and bore the portrait of Queen Wilhemina.
Only fourteen months after proclamation of indonesian Independence, id the official banknote of the Republic of Indonesia practically begin circulate. Despite the fact that its first issues was das dated 17 October 1945, yet 30 October 1946 was recorded as the beginning of the history of the republican money. Through the Yogyakarta station of the RRI (Radio Republic of Indonesia) the Vice President Drs. Mohammad Hatta, introduced the birth of the Republican banknotes replacing the ones preiously issued by the Japanese occupation forces and de Javasche Bank.
The date 30 October was later adopted as the Financial Day. To mark its 50th anniversary, a stamp series is issued along with a first day cover and numismatic cover.
